Christmas is closer than ever, and with that comes the process of thinking about what gifts to buy. Additionally, this is the time of year when many employees receive their bonuses, money that is eagerly awaited by many throughout the year. Christmas is a time when we give something or buy that desired item, and it is also a season where we can end up in debt for the coming months. Therefore, it is important to know how to make smart purchases during Christmas to save money and avoid financial strain in the following months of the upcoming year. Here are some brief tips to consider for your Christmas shopping:
  • Plan, plan, plan your purchases: Create a budget, make a list of the people you are going to gift, and determine the amount to spend per person.
  • Do not stray from your list during the holidays. Keep it with you wherever you go. It will help you stick to the budget and avoid impulse buying.
  • Don't go shopping without a purpose and a clear direction.
  • Christmas cards are not necessary and generally, if you can write in your own handwriting, it is even more sentimental.
  • Call loved ones who live abroad instead of sending a card. In most cases, they prefer to hear from you than receive a Christmas card.
  • Keep an eye out for coupons for holiday purchases and gifts that appear in the newspaper during this season.
  • If you are not in a hurry to shop, wait until December 23rd; the discounts are incredible. It is the second day of the biggest discounts after Black Friday or Good Weekend.
  • It’s fun to take the family to the movies, but you can save money and enjoy a lot by watching Christmas classics on DVD at home.
  • Do a gift exchange: A gift exchange is fun and ideal during this season.
  • Shop on Fridays. Stores usually offer online discounts on Fridays before the big weekend sales.
  • Shop online; it is more convenient and generally much cheaper.
  • Use social media. Follow your favorite stores during the holidays. They usually offer discounts through Facebook and Twitter.
  • Shop online. Most stores cannot compete with “online” prices, plus it is more convenient and avoids the temptation to buy on impulse.
  • Before shopping online, take the time to look for the best prices.
  • Give something to someone in need. A toy to a child, a shirt to a poor person.
  • Plan your shopping day. Choose a day and try to do everything in one session. This will help you avoid additional expenses and stress.
