Every season has its own charm, and autumn is no exception. A bounty of fruits, mushrooms, and vegetables awaits us to cook with the freshest and most nutritious offerings that Mother Nature will provide in the coming months.
Just as spring brings vibrant and fresh flavors and summer carries citrus and refreshing notes, autumn brings the earthy flavors and warm hues that we love. As we have discussed, the healthiest and tastiest thing you can do in your kitchen is to prepare your meals with seasonal products; these ingredients bring the most nutrients and the best flavors as they are at their peak.
Starting with fruits, this is the time to head to the market and get figs, grapes, melons, peaches, pears, and plums. All these ingredients benefit from the cooling temperatures and the shorter daylight hours. Their flavor at this time is unmatched, as they feature nutty and hazelnut flavors in all the fruits.
Vegetables are probably the ones that benefit the most from this time of year. Earthy flavors and warm, sandy textures can be found in cauliflower, eggplant, radishes, tomatoes, and of course, beets. The colors of the vegetables acquire more depth and are perfect for making warm salads accompanied by nuts, almonds, and other dried fruits.
If you love seafood, then this is also your season. While most people associate fish and shellfish with beach, sun, and sea, the truth is that the cooler temperatures beginning to appear in the oceans from September and October strengthen marine creatures, making them better for cooking. Clams and crabs, for example, are at their best during these months, presenting a sweet flavor and a soft yet firm texture.
What is unmissable in autumn are nuts. The natural oil from walnuts, almonds, chestnuts, and others makes them silky, full of forest flavor, and indispensable on the autumn table. These can be used in preparations, but they are undoubtedly also excellent as a natural snack without any need for sauces, seasonings, or anything else.
