Is it the end of chocolate and coffee?

Organizations like the UN and FAO warned that chocolate and coffee prices would skyrocket starting November 2024, and the prophecy has come true.

In a report published in 2024, the UN mentions that the price of cocoa, the main ingredient in chocolate, had increased “4 times the average every 10 years,” while the price of coffee nearly doubled. To make matters worse, the price of tea also increased by 15%.

As for the data from 2025, media reports indicate that in February 2025, the price of coffee reached historic levels: $4.2 per 450 grams. A truly concerning price, right?

Things become even more alarming when you compare coffee prices from January 2024 to those in March 2025: the increase was 105.7%, as it rose from $1.8 to $3.8 per 450 grams, according to Vanguardia MX.

We also don’t have good news for chocolate lovers. This media reveals that the price of cocoa recorded an exorbitant increase: it went up by 103%. Why? Unfortunately, it is due to climate.

In summary, droughts have affected major coffee producers in Vietnam and Brazil, causing the price to rise. In the case of chocolate, cocoa has also been affected by extreme weather. Climate change is to blame!

To understand the significant increase in chocolate and coffee prices, we must remember that these two ingredients are produced in tropical climates, which “have been increasingly affected by extreme weather events,” according to Capital Finance International.

Now that you know that the price of chocolate and coffee has increased due to climate change, you will be more prepared for what lies ahead. For our part, we recommend consuming Mexican coffee, chocolate made with national cocoa, and responsible consumption.
