According to specialists, this condition affects both men and women and is due to a malfunction of the apocrine sweat glands, located mainly in the armpits, genitals, and chest.
They are responsible for each person's odor and are different from the eccrine glands, which excrete the liquid you sweat. In fact, some tips to eliminate underarm odor are designed to combat sweat and not the foul smell.
When "abnormal" apocrine sweat comes into contact with external bacteria and mixes with factors such as poor personal hygiene or an unhealthy diet, it produces less pleasant odors.
In severe cases, this condition significantly interferes with individuals' lives, as according to Dr. Anthony Synnott, a sociologist at London University, odors are manifestations of what one is.
Most cases of bromhidrosis are due to genetic issues; but it can also be caused by diabetes or thyroid or kidney problems, which must be treated in a special way.
Here are some tips to eliminate underarm odor:
1. Tea against odor. Prepare a sage infusion and drink it three to four times a day. Its thermoregulating properties will help you combat excessive sweating and unpleasant odors.
2. Apply tea. Prepare a cup of mint and rosemary tea. Strain it and apply it to those sweaty areas after bathing.
3. Black bath. Prepare a black tea infusion in two liters of water and use it as shower water or preferably pour it into a tub to soak for about 20 minutes.
4. Lavender oil. Dilute 5 drops of lavender oil in half a liter of boiled or mineral water, store it in an airtight container, and use it for about 10 days.
5. Good lettuce. Squeeze some lettuce leaves and apply the juice to your armpits or another affected area of your body. Apple cider vinegar can also be useful.
6. Appropriate and clean clothing. Wear clothes that facilitate your perspiration and no matter how clean they seem, never wear them twice, especially if it’s underwear where bacteria and sweat leave residues.
7. No addictions. Avoid alcoholic beverages and stimulants like coffee, which increase sweat production, and as much as possible consume less garlic, onion, or strong spices whose aromas are eliminated through sweat.
8. Shave your armpits. Although it may sound clichéd, wash your armpits well and try to shave them. Excess hair can harbor more fungi and bacteria.
9. Special soap. Use soaps that contain germicides in their composition to eliminate bacteria from the skin.
10. In extreme cases, topical antibiotics are recommended instead of powerful moisturizers or antiperspirants containing 20 percent aluminum chloride.
