Who hasn’t enjoyed a good burger? It's impossible not to savor each of its ingredients and the perfect flavor of the meat. However, have you ever wondered where it comes from and how it originated? Well, it’s believed that its origins date back to Europe as part of its culinary tradition.

The first minced meat was prepared in the 4th century, but other historians claim that the Mongols introduced it in the 13th century. From there, it made its way to Europe, when the famous steak tartare was created in Moscow. It was the Russians themselves who brought the recipe to the Germans in the 18th century, arriving at the port of Hamburg.

By 1747, the Hamburg sausage appeared, but it evolved to take on a round shape. Thus, Hamburg confirmed itself as a strong exporter of beef, and restaurants added Hamburg-style meat to their menus, giving rise to the term hamburger.

Now you know a little more about the history of the hamburger, but don’t forget this tip if you want to taste the perfect burger: gourmet ingredients are the great secret. Here are some recommendations to achieve a contest-worthy burger:

  1. Use blue cheese instead of American cheese.
  2. Use Dijon mustard instead of regular mustard.
  3. Use arugula instead of lettuce.
  4. Use artisanal buns baked the same day instead of packaged bread.
  5. Add caramelized onions and sautéed mushrooms.
