“Things change,” and the countryside is an example of this concept. Whether due to climate change, uncontrolled demographics in some countries, or limited investment in the agricultural sector, this has led to a scarcity and poor quality of food. However, genetically modified foods are a solution to this problem. Our friends at Salud180.com share the truth about genetically modified foods.
According to the FAO (Food and Drug Administration), biotechnological crops “can help strengthen agriculture in marginal areas and restore production in degraded lands.”
Transgenic foods are those that include in their composition an ingredient derived from an organism that has been incorporated, through genetic techniques, a gene from another species. Thanks to biotechnology, a gene can be transferred from one organism to another to endow it with a special quality that it lacks.
In the case of Mexico, the COFEPRIS (Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks) has authorized the entry and marketing in the national food chain of several types of corn, soy, tomato, papaya, and canola, among others. Today, they can be imported and are used for various purposes, and they are as safe as conventional foods.
Transgenic crops reduce production costs; that is, the money needed to prepare, plant, cultivate, and harvest each hectare. This makes food accessible to everyone, improving people’s health and even helping to prevent overweight.
It is said that these foods can cause harm; however, the FAO states that they are safe and can even be the ideal strategy for food to have a greater nutritional contribution and prevent nutritional deficiencies.
