Retinol and Bakuchiol: similarities and differences

There are moments when we wish we could stop time, especially on the skin of our face so that it always looks young and radiant.

Nowadays, there are countless creams, masks, and treatments to combat wrinkles and maintain luminous skin, but recently, there is a star ingredient that many desire: retinol. However, it is not the only one, as there is another ingredient that is starting to steal the spotlight: bakuchiol.

Let's break it down. What is retinol? If you are not familiar with retinol, we will explain it here.

Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A, a nutrient that aids in cell regeneration, but how does this reflect on the skin? Well, it reduces acne, evens skin tone, removes spots, and prevents aging due to its antioxidant action, which is why many brands have incorporated it into their products. Sounds amazing!

However, it's not all sunshine and rainbows, as retinol must be used with caution. Using it at a high percentage or too frequently can cause irritation, itching, peeling, and even burns, so you need to be careful.

Additionally, we should avoid using it especially after stressful situations for the skin, such as exfoliation, irritation, sun exposure, hair removal, and if taking medications for acne.

Let's talk about Bakuchiol

Bakuchiol is an active ingredient derived from medicinal plants that, due to its benefits, is shaking retinol off its throne.

Although bakuchiol acts almost identically to retinol, we can add that it is healing, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, among many other things.

Retinol vs. Bakuchiol: similarities and differences

Similarities. Both actives help prevent and reverse signs of aging, reducing wrinkles and fine lines. Additionally, they promote cell renewal, stimulate collagen and elastin production to provide firmness to the skin, combat photoaging, and prevent skin deterioration.

Differences. Among the main differences between retinol and bakuchiol is their origin; while retinol is a derivative of vitamin A that is animal-based, bakuchiol is obtained from the seeds of medicinal plants like babchi and Otholobium pubescens, and being a 100% plant extract, it can be used in vegan products.

Another difference between the two substances is their side effects; while with retinol you have to be careful with dosage and frequency, bakuchiol is suitable for all skin types, even sensitive ones, and can even be used by people with psoriasis.

Knowing these two actives and having them on your side, you will look spectacular, choose the best one for you.
