Brushing our teeth is a very important part of our daily personal hygiene. This activity will help us maintain teeth and mouth with fewer bacteria, odors, and an enviable smile. For this, dentists continuously recommend brushing teeth after each meal, but there are also mouthwashes that reinforce oral cleanliness and eliminate bacteria that simple brushing cannot remove. Choosing the right mouthwash can sometimes be a bit annoying, as there are various brands and types of these products. In this regard, we want to provide you with the following tips to help you choose better. Choose your correct mouthwash Currently, there are all kinds of mouthwashes depending on the result we seek. For example, to prevent cavities, we can use mouth rinses rich in fluoride; or for cases where cavities have already developed, there are also specific rinses for treatment. Additionally, there are other specific rinses to combat and eliminate bacterial plaque or halitosis. As for children, we can introduce them to the use of mouthwash by choosing products with low alcohol content and a milder, sweeter flavor; as mouth rinses with high levels of alcohol (between 18 and 26%) can cause a burning sensation in their cheeks, teeth, and gums, or even lead to poisoning if swallowed. How to use mouthwash To rinse the mouth correctly, first, we must choose a mouthwash that suits our needs. Next, we should take about five milliliters of the product into our mouth and gargle with the liquid for at least thirty seconds. Finally, we will spit it out and repeat as necessary to remove any residue of the product. It is important that, to help the mouthwash perform its antibacterial function, we avoid diluting it in water, refrain from consuming food for thirty minutes after using the mouthwash, do not rinse our mouth with water to remove the taste of the rinse, and always do it after a good brushing. Additionally, we should not overuse mouthwash, especially if we are using one that contains too much alcohol; it is advisable to rinse our teeth once a day. Doing it several times a day would be excessive and even harmful. Risks of mouthwash It is undeniable that mouthwashes help maintain fresh and clean breath. However, some people misuse mouthwash by rinsing three times a day, unaware that, according to a publication from the Dental Journal of Australia, mouthwashes can stimulate the onset of oral cancer. This is due to the high amount of alcohol present in mouthwashes, which can even exceed the concentration of alcohol in wine or beer. Moreover, excessive alcohol is not suitable for sensitive teeth. However, this does not mean that we should eliminate mouthwashes from our oral hygiene. The proper use of mouthwash is very beneficial for our dental health, and on the other hand, there are alcohol-free rinses on the market that, in addition to helping us maintain fresh breath and clean teeth, do not expose our mouth to a potential development of serious diseases.
